SHARING THE CREATIVE MOMENTS OF MY LIFEI
I recently had the privilege to paint alongside the legendary Koos Bronkhorst and brilliant young Wilko Roon in the beautiful home of the amazing artist and my friend, Yvette Beneke.
I must be honest, it turned out to be more of a painting workshop/demo (especially) for me!
I just wanted to absorb everything Koos Bronkhorst said and did. I mean, one can accumulate a lot of knowledge, tips and tricks after almost four decades of painting!
He grew up with an artist father and was encouraged to play musical instruments, and by the age of 10 he was already playing trumpet in bands and orchestras. He still does the music thing. But art was to become his profession and his passion. Although he never formally studied art, he learnt from masters like Mike Parsons, Alexander Rose-Innes and Adriaan Boshoff and doing the 1000 and more hours of painting, working through those frustrating “want to kick the canvas ” moments.
He is a humble, kind soul who love what he does and shares his invaluable knowledge freely and with a lot of patience.
I watched him paint, took photographs studying his every move trying to simulate his process (I promise this is just for my own learning purposes!!)
This session painting with my artists friends, inspired me to do a couple of ‘glowing sky’ land- and seascapes, incorporating what I learned from Koos into my own style of painting.
Some of these went quick, every brushstroke doing exactly what I intended it it to do. Then there were those I wanted to stab with the back of the paintbrush (I am actually a gentle kind person, honestly!!) that needed a little (LOT) more attention. No, I will not divulge.
What I will tell you is that I still need to do a lot of those 1000 applaud-free hours of painting and probably struggling through a few ‘canvas-kicking’ ones too. And some more painting sessions with awesome artists!!
